“MOSCOW SOUNDS”

 

 

REGULATIONS

Today Festival "Moscow Sounds" - is Russia's largest youth music forum, known far beyond the country. Its program includes gala concerts, solo performances of participating groups in the best Concert Halls of Moscow, creative meetings, lessons and master-classes, scientific-practical conference on the development of children's and youth musical creativity.

Sixteen of the previous festivals "Moscow Sounds", the first of which has united young musicians in 1990, were a great success. Group of participants, which  took part in them, were from the US, Japan, Italy, Germany, France, Austria, Poland, Bulgaria, China, Hong Kong, the Bahamas, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Thailand, Serbia and other countries, dozens of Russian cities.

The festival-contest «Sound Moscow» is held with the support of Chorus Inside International Choral Federation.

 

 

 

1. Objectives and goals.

• Preservation and enhancement of the cultural and historical heritage of Moscow and Russia.

• Formation of moral values in children and youth, education of patriotism.

• Promotion of culture, art, creativity of peoples of Russia in the framework of international cooperation.

• Enhance mutual understanding and friendly relations between children and young people from different countries.

• Mass involvement of children in choral singing.

• Improving children's performing arts.

• Support the functioning children and youth creative collectives, presenting their success at the international level.

• Solving the urgent problems of spiritual and moral education, the formation of moral values of young people.

• Education of children and young people respect and personal interest in the traditions of the artistic culture of the different countries.

• Creation of conditions for creative self-realization of young musicians and their social adaptation in the field of culture.

• Identifying and supporting talented creative youth Russia and other countries, education, patriotic and aesthetic education, the strengthening of a common cultural space, preservation and development of the cultural potential of the Russian Federation.


2. Nominations in the network of the Festival-contest:

1. Choirs and vocal groups of academic singing style.
2. Competition for the best execution of orthodox music.
3. Competition for the best execution of Catholic music.
4. National (folk) choirs and vocal groups.
5. Orchestras and chamber orchestras (ensembles) – national, wind band, symphony, variety, composite orchestras.
6. Vocal (academic direction). 
7. Solo singing (folk direction).
8. Composition creative work.

 

The competition consists of two rounds - qualifying and final.

I round - qualifying, correspondence form of participation (Internet competition).

II round - the final, full-time form of participation.

 

3. Festival-contest participants

Children and youth choral, folklore and instrumental (orchestras) groups and individual performers take part in the Festival.

The Festival-contest is an open event, thus groups of different departmental affiliation take part in it.

Separately conducted listening:

- School choirs,

- Choirs at Sunday schools and churches,

- Choirs of additional education

- Choirs of music and art schools.

The age of participants is from 7 to 28 years.

 

4. Age groups at the contest

I: Junior age group – from 7 to 10 years.

II: Middle-aged group – from 11 to 14 years.

III: Senior age group – from 15 to 18 years.

IV: Youth age group – to 28 years.

V: Аdult (without age restriction). (Only for Nominations: Choirs and vocal groups of academic singing style, Competition for the best execution of orthodox music, Competition for the best execution of Catholic music, National (folk) choirs and vocal groups.)

 

Note: mixed groups are allowed to perform. (15% max)

 

5. Participation terms

Performance is allowed only under the live accompaniment.

Choirs and vocal groups of academic singing style

The members in the choir is 20 persons.

The number of participants of vocal choral ensemble is from 12 to 19 persons.

Requirements to the competitive program:

I round:

Each group of participants performs a program consisting of 2 compositions, and the total duration of which is not more than 7 minutes.

 

The program should include:

  • Composition of spiritual music or choral classics;
  • a folk song, the processing of a folk song or an author's composition in a traditional manner;
  • Optional composition

Not less than one composition is performed without musical accompaniment (a cappella).

II round:

The team performs a program consisting of not less than 3 works, with a total duration of sounding not more than 10 minutes.

The team has the right to repeat no more than 1 work from the qualifying round.

The program should include:

  • Composition of spiritual music or choral classics;
  • a folk song, the processing of a folk song or an author's composition in a traditional manner;
  • Optional composition

Not less than one composition is performed without musical accompaniment (a cappella).

Mixed voices, male and female chorus are judged separately.

Changes in the program submitted for the competition are not allowed.

Class-choir (choral collectives, consisting of students of one class of a comprehensive school) and a school choir are listened to by categories:

• The first category includes choral and instrumental choirs of organizations of basic general education.

• The second category includes choral and instrumental choir groups of educational organizations with in-depth study of the subjects of the field "Art".

The collective of the first category has the right to repeat no more than 2 works from the qualifying round.

The collective of the second category has the right to repeat no more than 1 work.

The collectives recommended by the City Methodological Center (based on the results of the Moscow City Competition of Music and Speech Performing Art of Students "Fireworks Consonances") immediately go to the second round without participation in the qualifying round.

 

 

Competition for the best execution of orthodox music

I round:

Each collective participant sends a video program consisting of no less than 2 works, the time of pure sounding of the contest program is no more than 7 minutes (for all age groups).

  • I age group is welcomed to sing no more than 1 composition a capella
  • II age group must sing at least one composition a capella
  • III, IV and V age groups must sing the whole program a capella

Mixed voices, male and female chorus are judged separately.

Changes in the program submitted for the competition are not allowed.

II round:

Requirements for the program are the same as in the first round.

The team has the right to repeat no more than 1 work from the qualifying round.

 

Competition for the best execution of Catholic music

I round:

Each collective participant sends a video program consisting of no less than 2 works, the time of pure sounding of the contest program is no more than 7 minutes (for all age groups).

 

Russian groups are allowed to participate in the competition only after attending competition for the best execution of orthodox music

Mixed voices, male and female chorus are judged separately.

Changes in the program submitted for the competition are not allowed.

II round:

Requirements for the program are the same as in the first round.

The team has the right to repeat no more than 1 work from the qualifying round.

 

 

National (folk) choirs and vocal groups

Folklore ensembles oriented on ethnographic and pop interpretation of songs, folksong and folk dance ensembles and small group ensembles are invited to perform.

I round:

Each collective participant sends a video program consisting of 2 compositions different in character, with a total sound duration of no more than 6 minutes:

I age group - all works can be performed with accompaniment;

II-V age groups - it is mandatory to perform one of the songs, a cappella (lyric or ritual two- or three-voice song with elements of variation), as well as the performance of songs with movements.

The contest program should include 3-4 songs and should not last for more than 12 minutes of singing.

II round:

Each collective participates in a program consisting of 3-4 compositions different in character, with a total playing time of not more than 8 minutes.

I age group - all works can be performed with accompaniment;

II-V age groups - it is mandatory to perform one of the songs a cappella (lyrical or ritual two or three-voice song with elements of variation), as well as the performance of songs with movements.

Also in the program can be represented folk games, poetic folklore, fragments of folk rites and holidays, ritual compositions, household dances (quadrille, dance, round dance).

The collective has the right to repeat no more than 1 work from the qualifying round.

 

 

Orchestras and chamber orchestras and ensembles

I round:

Each collective participant sends a video program consisting of 2 compositions different in character.

II round:

The contest program should not include 3-4 compositions different in character; total duration should not be more than 20 minutes.

The program should include:

  • Original composition for the orchestra
  • Composition of classic or modern composer
  • Composition of symphonic, jazz or variety music
  • Processing (arrangement, instrumentation) of folk songs or dances.
  • Greater shape and accompaniment is welcome.

Requirements for orchestra lineup:

The number of illustrators in school orchestras should not be more than 20% from the number of group members.

The number of illustrators in secondary school orchestras should not be more than 10% from the number of group members.

It is allowed to use only one microphone for the soloist.

It is possible to use the keyboard or grand piano as a part of the orchestra only if it should be considered as a missing orchestra voice.

 

The committee can provide such instruments for the groups: tubular bells, a big drum, timpani, piano. Also provided are music stands for orchestra and conductor, one microphone for a soloist. Special requests must be specified in the online application and must be coordinated with the curator of the nomination!

 

Vocal singing (academic direction) and small ensambles

For audition, both soloists and vocal ensembles are allowed (the vocal ensemble consists of 2-11 participants).

I round:

Each participant sends a video program consisting of 2 works with a total sound duration of no more than 6 minutes:

• work of the participant's choice;

• a work of Russian or foreign classics.

II round:

Requirements for the program are the same as in the first round.

The participant has the right to repeat no more than 1 work from the qualifying round.

Changes in the program submitted for the competition are not allowed.

 

 

Solo singing (folk direction)

I round:

Each participant performed two compositions different in character, one of which is without musical accompaniment (a cappella) with a total sound duration of no more than 6 minutes.

II round:

Each participant performs two compositions different in character, one of them - a cappella.

Singing in the national language of the participant is encouraged by a special diploma.

The team has the right to repeat no more than 1 work from the qualifying round.

 

 

Composition artistic work

This nomination is held in one round.

The competition is organized by categories:

1. "Chamber Instrumental Music"

2. "Vocal Music of Academic Genres"

Two compositions different in character should be performed at the contest (except pop and jazz music).

 

Groups I and II: two compositions different in character (the total sounding time is not more than 7-9 minutes).

Groups III and IV: two compositions different in character (the total sounding time is not than 10-12 minutes).

The competition admits the works of young composers: students of children's music schools, children's art schools and other institutions of additional education, as well as amateur musicians.

Students of musical colleges and colleges, students and graduate students of universities, as well as professional composers are not allowed to participate in competitive audition.

The participation of the contestant in the performance of his own work is compulsory. If the works are written for an instrument that the contestant does not own, it is possible to involve other performers at the audition.

Criteria for evaluation:

- the originality of the musical language (melody, harmony, rhythm, form, etc.);

- the novelty of musical thinking;

-unity of form and content;

- Musicality and sincerity;

-quality choice of literary material (for vocal works);

level of performance. 

 

6. Rounds and periods of the contest

The festival is held in two rounds in full-time and virtual forms.

FIRST TOUR of the contest - qualifying (virtual)

The application, a link to the video recording of the contest entry and documents required for participation, are accepted until February 15, 2019.

The results will be published on the website of the Program "Sing Moscow Children" (choirsofmoscow.ru) no later than March 4, 2019.

SECOND ROUND of the contest

Correspondence Festival (for participants who do not have the opportunity to attend) Video reception: until April 20, 2019 (inclusive).

Full-time Festival
The full-time festival (for the participants) is held from May 1 to May 2, 2019

As part of the full-time festival:

  • Gala concert dedicated to the opening of the festival: May 1, 2019 (Svetlanov Hall of the Moscow International House of Music, beginning at 18.00)

 

  •  Competitive auditions:
    April 29, 2019 - nomination " Composition artistic work" (White Hall of Centre “Radost”)
    April 30, 2019 - the nomination "Class - choir" (Central Exhibition Hall)

May 2 and 3, 2019 - nomination " Academic choral singing" (Chamber hall MMDM)
May 2, 2019 - nomination "Folk choral singing"
(The Great Hall of the Central House of Artists)

May 2, 2019 - nomination "Vocal singing (academic direction) and small ensambles" (Organ Hall of the CCD and MAE "Radost”)

May 2, 2019 - nomination "Orchestral Performance"
(Concert Hall of the Gnesin Academy of Music)

May 2, 2019 - the nomination "The best performance of Orthodox spiritual music" and "The best performance of Western European spiritual music" (Small Hall of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory)

  • Final concert: May 4, 2019 (Great Hall of Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory, beginning at 14.00)
  • Final conference: May 4, 2019 

 

 

7. Procedure and terms of document presentation for participation in the Festival

To participate in the festival must be no later than February 4th, 2019:

7.1. Fill in the online application form.

The full list of the pupils of the collective is required to be attached to the application, containing the following data of each participant: name (fully), last name, date of birth, age, full name of the general education school, class. The application is invalid without a list.

 

Registration fee for participation in the festival is:

for the collective / soloist from Russia - 1000 rubles.

for a foreign collective / soloist - 100 euros.

 

Participants from the institutions of the department of the Moscow Department of Education and foreign participants in the correspondence round from the entrance fee have been released.

 

With participation in several nominations an organizational fee is paid for each nomination.

For participation in the nominations of spiritual music ("Competition for the best performance of Orthodox spiritual music" and "Competition for the best performance of Western European spiritual music") is introduced once.

  • Creative characteristic of leaders.
  • A List of group members ages of the singers.
  • Color Photo of the group.
  • Color Photo of the leader.
  • Link on the Internet a video of competitive performance.

 

7.3. Competitive video must meet the following requirements:

  • Conductor (or one of the choir members) must be before the performance of the competition says program category and the name of the choir. The participants of the collective and the conductor must be visible on the video;
  • The contest program must be performed in a concert format, without stopping (microphones are allowed);
  • Video shooting should be done without turning off and stopping the video camera - from the beginning to the end of the contest program execution (the subsequent installation is not allowed);
  • The entry must be made no earlier than 2018.

 

Participants should download their performance video clips made for the contest audition on the video service YouTube (youtube.com).

ATTENTION! While downloading video on YouTube it is necessary to indicate:

•  In the “File Name” field:

1. Country;

2. City;

3. Name of the group / first name, last name and age of the soloist.

• In the “Description” field:

1. Name of the contest: International Musical Contest

“MOSCOW SOUNDS 2019”

2. Nomination;

3. Category;

4. Title, composer, the author of the performed composition text;

5. Last name, first name and patronymic of the leader.

 

7.3.1. Video that does not meet these requirements will not be evaluated. Participants will be asked to provide a new video that meets the conditions of the competition. 

 

 

8. The Jury

The Festival jury is formed from the number of specialists in the sphere of culture and art in Russia and foreign countries. All of them have outstanding achievements in the sphere of musical performances and pedagogy. Also the jury includes famous composers and conductors and representatives of world musical public.

 

9. Contest performance rating

Contest groups performances are rated on a 1-10 scale.

Participants are admitted in the II round received 6 points and above.

Estimation of participants in the II round:

• 10 points: grand prize;

• From 9 to 9,9 points: the winner of the first class;

• From 8 to 8,9 points: the winner of the second class;

• From 7 to 7,9 points: the winner of the third class;

• From 6 to 6,9 points: diploma winner.

 

The following parameters (criteria) are included in the professional rating by the jury:

• Correspondence of the program to the theme of the Festival and the depth of its exposure in the compositions performed;

• Artistic and imagery solutions;

• Performance skills;

• Complexity and ingenuity of repertoire.

The jury reserves the right to award the groups with special prizes.

The Jury decisions are not subject to any appeal.

Any contest regulations violation leads to the loss of points during the rating of the group performance.
